Beetroot Juice: A Game-Changer for Older Adults' Blood Pressure?
56 views1:55
Could a simple glass of beetroot juice be the game-changer for high blood pressure in older adults? A groundbreaking study reveals that drinking nitrate-rich beetroot juice significantly lowered blood pressure in adults aged 60 and over, but surprisingly, this effect was not observed in younger adults.
The secret lies within the oral microbiome. Beetroot juice causes a critical shift in oral bacteria, converting dietary nitrates into nitric oxide, which is essential for relaxing blood vessels. For older adults, who naturally produce less nitric oxide, this pathway offers a vital, practical dietary addition to support heart health.

A new study reveals that a simple glass of beetroot juice could be a game-changer for older adults struggling with high blood pressure. Researchers from the University of Exeter found that drinking nitrate-rich beetroot juice twice daily for just two weeks significantly lowered blood pressure in adults aged 60 and older. But here's the twist. The same effect did not occur in younger adults under 30. The secret lies in the mouth, specifically in the oral microbiome. The study, published in Free Radical Biology and Medicine, analyzed bacteria in participants' mouths before and after consuming either beetroot juice or a placebo. In older adults, the juice caused a shift in oral bacteria, decreasing Prevotella and increasing Neisseria. This change was linked to a drop in blood pressure. How does it work? Dietary nitrate from the juice is converted by oral bacteria into nitrite, which then supports the production of nitric oxide, a molecule that relaxes blood vessels. Older adults naturally produce less nitric oxide, making this nitrate pathway more critical for them. The study recruited 36 older adults and 39 younger ones in a crossover design. While both age groups experienced microbiome changes, only the older group saw blood pressure ...
